13세 때부터 받은 성악 교육에서 우러나는 풍부한 음량을 바탕으로 음계를 길게 지속시키는 특유의 창법, 그에 덧붙여진 부드러운 비브라토를 무기로 하는 그는 1950년대 후반 팝 음악계에 모습을 나타낸 이래 그는 팝 음악사를 뒤바꿀 정도의 업적을 남기진 못했어도 손꼽히는 다작(多作) 아티스트로 지금까지 베스트 앨범 등을 포함해 100여장이 훨씬 넘는 음반을 냈고 그 중 무려 60여장을 차트에 올려놓았다.
